Bridgestone Super Bowl Ads

What do you think about the communications tactic Bridgestone Tire Co. is taking in it’s advertising during the Superbowl? Will humor work?

3 Min Ad Age - Coke, Rxs & Ledger

CLICK HERE to watch this Ad Age clip.

Above is a link to Advertising Age's three minute program, which highlights news in the industry. The clip shows how Coke uses different marketing techniques to advertise its brand in China in conjunction with the upcoming Olympics.

The three minute show talks about pharmaceutical ads which are under a lot of scrutiny in the advertising and communication field these days. I think the public should pay close attention to the government and how laws may inhibit or restrict some pharmaceutical advertising.

Finally Ad Age shows it is in touch with pop culture by mentioning the death of actor Heath Ledger. This is an unfortunate happening that must be handled delicately by the news media. I was actually sitting next to someone in class Wednesday night who interns at WFAA Channel 8. She overheard someone in a news room say that they did not want to air a story on Ledger’s death. Do you think WFAA or other similar news organizations should run a story about Heath Ledger’s death? Or is that the job of People Magazine (or the like) to inform the public about this?

The New Blockbuster Way of Doing Things

An interesting article from Adage, "Transforming the Movie-Rental Model: Netflix Tries Set-Top Box," asks, "what will it take to get consumers to fork over good money for entertainment when so much already is available online free? Two deals -- one already announced, one anticipated -- illustrate what content producers and distributors are considering to get couch potatoes to take the bait.... "

Basically the article talks about how consumers may be able to rent movies on thier iPods instead of going to the store or waiting for a Netflix DVD to show up at your home three days after ordering it online.

Cool idea?

Welcome

I’m studying both advertising & corporate communications and public affairs (CCPA) at SMU. This blog is part of a CCPA class that involves corporate networking and modern technology. Our class focuses on the blog. Each student has created a site that explores their interests in the communication field and allows them to post opinions about any topic. I’ll have to admit that I’m not a pro at bloging, but I hope to learn more throughout the semester. If you have any advice about the best practices in the PR or communications field, I would love to know about it. Please feel free to post.

Thanks,

Whitney
